Ahmaud Arbery loved to run and he was killed doing just that. Today, I ran with him in my thoughts.
During my run, I thought about what must have been going through his head in the moments leading up to his death. It all happened so quickly. As he struggles to fend off his white attackers, he gets shot multiple times. He turns to run in order to get away from his killers but he can‘t. He simply collapses in the middle of the street, never to get up again. For him, life just stopped.
It’s taken me a long time to realize how privileged I am but since the color of my skin isn’t perceived as a threat, I don’t have to worry about the things that black men and women have to on a daily basis. When I’m running, it‘s not uncommon for a total stranger to wave and even encourage me as I run by them but now I’m seeing that many people don’t have this same privilege.
If you are able to, please run or walk for Ahmaud today, but more importantly, talk with your loved ones about how this loss of life makes you feel and the way that racism is constantly present in our society. If we talk about these things and get a conversation going, it’s certainly not going to solve the problem, but it will spread more awareness and I think we can all benefit from the humanity that it may bring. #IRunWithMaud
